Welcome to our balcony!

Hello, and welcome to our balcony!

In the fall of 2011, Beth and I moved from our high-rise apartment building in Denver’s Capitol Hill, to our current residence in the Congress Park area – a Denver neighborhood with a lower-key, yet still decidedly urban lifestyle.  As with most big changes, this move allowed for new opportunities; some expected, and others unforeseen.  New neighbors became new friends, old friends became new neighbors, and a new-to-us rental space with plenty of historic charm and detail was ours to live in.  Only one question remained:

What were we going to do with this unprecedented wealth of outdoor space??

SAMSUNG

Granted it’s no backyard in suburbia, but the idea that we could now walk out onto our very own roofless/wall-less/sun-soaked patio was simply unheard of in our previous city-dwellings.  Here’s what “outdoor space” looked like in our previous lives:

And to fully appreciate the metaphorical distance traveled, here’s our early idea of “container gardening”:

But then it happened.  Not long after the move, on a brisk and sunny day in January, this found its way into our lives:

And our gardening thumbs, while still confined to small spaces, have been growing greener ever since…

As you can tell, our concept of what is possible when it comes to combining city life with home-grown edibles changed dramatically over one short season in our new home.  We’ve learned a lot; we can’t wait to learn more this year; and we’re excited to document and share our endeavors with all of you.  So thanks for reading, and we hope to hear from you too!
